For Shell Canada, Aboriginal recruitment starts long before a candidate’s resume arrives in the HR department.
As a major employer in the Alberta oil sands project, Shell Canada continues to use a proactive approach with initiatives such as trades training, cultural diversity education and community outreach.
“We believe you really have to help people way before they get close to employment,” says Denise McBride, community affairs representative for Shell Canada’s oil sands upstream division.
“You need to do the work beforehand to ensure that they’re going to be successful when they get to the job site…we’re not just going to set up people to come to work for us and then not be successful,” she says.
By utilizing a number of recruitment and retention strategies, Shell Canada has created a positive profile within many northern communities – a profile that continues to build a strong Aboriginal workforce for the corporation.
