When The Home Depot built a new store on First Nations land in Westbank, BC, it decided to employ an innovative community-centered approach to staffing it.
“We said, we’re building on your land, what would you suggest as to how we should go about offering opportunities to your constituents?” says Angie Goldsmith, Division Staffing Manager (Retail).
“They made the suggestion that we have a career fair especially for us – come on site, make sure you bring enough information to showcase a wide variety of jobs as we have people who are self-employed,” she adds.
Held in the local community center, the idea of a narrow-focused career fair turned out to be a great suggestion.
“We were there to answer questions and provide job descriptions and do interviewing on the spot,” says Goldsmith.
