Guiding Circles

National Aboriginal Career Development Dialogue 2008

Guiding Circles has been a wonderful success story, reaching into communities across Canada to inspire Aboriginal youth to identify specific life stories in a positive, focused, self-reflective way, connecting their personal discoveries to the realm of school and work. Discovering one’s gifts, talents and sense of self offers an incredible source of strength to walk the career journey.

The Aboriginal Human Resource Council understands that creating more career development tools and expanding our partnerships is critical to engaging the supply side of the Aboriginal labour equation. We share a responsibility with our educational partners to create new strategies that continue to expand opportunities for our youth to explore their potential and find satisfying and sustainable careers.

On April 21-22, 2008 the council hosted a national meeting of subject-matter experts, researchers and practitioners of career and personal development in Montreal, Quebec. Drawing together career development counselors, health and addictions programs, government representatives, Aboriginal Human Resource Development Agreement holders and special interest groups representing youth and women issues, the meeting cast a wide net to gather the most current and successful approaches to Aboriginal career development.

We’re proud to share this report from the meeting and hope that it will serve as a spark to generate more ideas, more strategies and more solutions. As the council expands its focus to become Canada’s leading innovators in Aboriginal recruitment, retention, advancement and career development we look forward to a continuing dialogue with our partners across Canada.
