The goal of the council’s new youth strategy is to make connections that bring employers and Indigenous employees together. Through this connection, new ideas about Indigenous inclusion can be introduced and the needs of the corporate world can be combined with the realities of young Indigenous graduates. That tall task falls to the council’s talented pool of YIP’s – Young Indigenous Professionals who are more than ready to take on the job.
The YIP’s idea was born from a desire to capture some of the passion, hope and joy that came from connecting 100 Aboriginal graduates from all across Canada at the council’s inaugural Inclusion Works ’09 event. Initially billed as an advisory body within the council, the YIP’s have grown in numbers with the addition of the Inclusion Works ‘10 and ‘11 participants.
With the blessing of the council’s board of directors in 2010, a YIP’s advisory group was formed that would receive administrative, management and financial support from the council. The group would nurture the council’s supply side work and its mandate to advance the participation of Indigenous people in the economy, in Canada and beyond.
The future success of the YIP’s is limited only by the imagination of its members who have the potential to become an international influence, empowering youth across borders to embrace success and join the ranks of YIP alumni. YIP’s are inclusive of all Indigenous post-secondary grads in Canada and beyond. The word ‘young’ is defined as a young professional – not a person that is necessarily “youthful” in age.
